A few basic hints if you’re going to University

Going to university, for the majority of students, is the first time they will be moving away from home. This can be both liberating and daunting, especially when first arriving to a new town or city which will be home for the next few years. Here’s a few things to expect, look forward to, and perhaps prepare yourself for when going to university.

The sheer size of a university can take some getting used to in the first few weeks. Finding your specific seminar room in your first week of lessons can take a lot longer than you might expect. If you’re still getting your bearings it can be a good idea to aim to get to your class five or ten minutes early, just in case you take a few wrong turns. A lot of universities offer apps to help students find their way round university as well. After a few weeks though the twists and turns of a campus will become second nature to you, and finding those spots that suits you for studying, socialising, and everything in between is a lovely experience in itself.

Where you choose to live when you move to university is obviously a huge factor in your university experience. Student halls can work for many people, and the accommodation tours at open days can help give you a feel if this would be the right fit for you. Alternatives, such as the large housing plots offered by student accommodation Huddersfield can be preferable for some students, or if there is a shortage of university offered accommodation.

Social life for many first years outweighs the academic side of university. It’s not the end of the world if this happens to you. Part of the learning experience of university is working out a healthy balance of work and fun, and this will often come from learning from your mistakes. Societies are often a great way to meet new friends and kick start your uni social life. There is an abundance of societies on offer at most universities, something that will appeal to anyone, helping you find people with similar interests to you. Freshers fairs are often held at universities where students can see all the different societies on offer. Try and not sign up to too many societies on the day, as often you’ll find it’s too time consuming to commit to all of them throughout the term.
